Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced at The Walt Disney Company earnings conference call, Tuesday, that the entertainment company will introduce the epic adventure movie “Mulan” to its streaming platform, Disney Plus, starting September 4. Like many companies, Chapek admitted they were forced by the pandemic to consider different approaches and look for new opportunities.

Disney’s decision excited many fans, but it also received criticisms from both U.S. and U.K. theater chains, saying that to bring films like “Mulan” to a streaming platform seemed bold enough to not care about what this would do to their businesses—and to the future of theaters as well. But while no hard-and-fast rule can be set for now on how they are to release films in the cinemas, Chapek promised that “Mulan” will be released simultaneously in open theaters in countries where Disney Plus is not available.

“Mulan” is a live-action feature film based on Disney’s 2008 animated film “Mulan.” In it, a young Chinese maiden disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father. The film stars Yifei Liu as Mulan, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung and Jet Li as Emperor.

“During this unpredictable period, we thought it was important to find alternative ways to bring this exceptional family-friendly film to them in a timely manner,” said Chapek.
